Bamboo Plywood: The Sustainable Alternative To Traditional Hardwood

Here at Zen Kōen, we ensure that our raw materials come from environmentally and socially responsible sources. For our wooden products, we have selected bamboo plywood as our sustainable alternative to traditional hardwood.

Here are three main benefits brought about by bamboo plywood and why we love it:

1. Bamboo Grows Faster Than Oak And Other Hardwood Trees

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth. It can be harvested in three to five years. However, it takes 10 to 20 years for most hardwood to grow before harvesting.

2. Stronger And Harder Than Most Wood

Bamboo plywood is made of fine layers of bamboo strips laid in parallel order and kiln dried, sanded smooth and then laminated edge to edge to create a single-ply panel.

It has a tensile strength of 28,000psi - making it 25% harder than red oak, and 12% more durable than maple wood.

3. Sustainable Option

Bamboo can be harvested without destroying the plantation due to its fast growing nature. Bamboo stems sprout new shoots during the next rains.
